If you're considering custom printed apparel, here's everything you should know before placing your order.

What Is Screen Printing?

Screen printing is a printing process where ink is pushed through a fine mesh screen onto fabric to create a design. Each color in the artwork is printed separately using its own custom-made screen, allowing the final design to build one layer of ink at a time.

Because the ink sits on top of the fabric instead of being absorbed into it, screen printed designs are known for their rich color, sharp edges, and exceptional durability.

Although modern equipment has made the process faster and more precise, the basic technique has remained largely unchanged for decades because it simply works.

How Does the Screen Printing Process Work?

Creating a screen printed shirt involves much more than pressing ink onto fabric. Every order goes through several important steps to ensure a clean, professional result.

Step 1: Preparing the Artwork

The process begins with artwork that's separated into individual colors. Since each color is printed independently, every color needs its own screen.

Simple, high-contrast artwork with solid colors typically produces the cleanest and most consistent prints.

Step 2: Creating the Screens

A fine mesh screen is coated with a light-sensitive emulsion.

The artwork is transferred onto the screen using light exposure, leaving open areas where ink will pass through while blocking the rest of the design.

One screen is created for every ink color used in the artwork.

Step 3: Printing the Design

The garment is positioned on the press, and ink is pulled across each screen using a squeegee.

The screen allows ink to pass only where the design should appear.

If the design contains multiple colors, the shirt moves through each screen one at a time until every color has been printed in perfect alignment.

Step 4: Curing the Ink

After printing, the shirt passes through a conveyor dryer where the ink is cured at a high temperature.

This curing process permanently bonds the ink to the garment, helping create the long-lasting finish screen printing is known for.

Can Screen Printing Handle Detailed Artwork?

Yes, but there are some limitations.

Fine details, gradients, and photographic images can often be screen printed using specialty techniques like halftones, but they usually require additional setup and experience to produce great results.

For highly detailed, full-color artwork with lots of gradients, another decoration method such as DTF may sometimes be a better fit.
